What to Expect
Youth Aikido
In a youth Aikido class, participants can expect an energetic, fun, and respectful environment where they will learn the fundamental techniques of this martial art. Classes include a formal bow in, warm-up exercises, instruction in basic movements, and practice with partners to develop and refine technique, learn how to fall safely, and build core strength, flexibility, and balance. Students advance through rankings marked by different belt colors.

History
Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the early 20th century. O-Sensei as he is often known, developed the technique after extensive training in various traditional martial arts. His goal was to create a means of defense against attack that, by redirecting energy, succeeds in not causing harm. Based on timing and technique rather than strength, Aikido is suitable for people of all sizes and fitness levels.

Uniform
Until an Aikido practitioner achieves the level of black belt, they wear a white gi: cotton jacket, trousers, and belt. Aikido is practiced barefoot.
