Aikido was developed by O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969). O-Sensei practiced many martial arts in his lifetime before he founded the art we call Aikido.
He believed that Aikido was a way to resolve the inner conflict we all face and thus bring peace to an often-violent world.

The word Aikido is comprised of three syllables:
Ai (to join, to harmonize, to connect, to merge, to love)
Ki (universal creative energy)
Do (the way or path)
Aikido: To connect with the path of universal creative energy
