Aikido was developed by O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). O-Sensei practiced many martial arts in his lifetime before he founded the art we call Aikido. His primary belief was that Aikido was a way to resolve the inner conflict we all face and, in turn, bring peace to an often-violent world.

The word Aikido is comprised of three syllables:

Ai (to join, to harmonize, to connect, to merge, to love)

Ki (universal creative energy)

Do (the way or path)

Therefore Aikido is the path of harmony with the creative energy of the universe.

Aikido philosophy and technique are interwoven to create a healthy form of character refinement and self-protection. Aikido technique is specially designed to be non-destructive. De-emphasizing destructive technique leads the student towards a non-fighting mind. This non-violent philosophy is an integral part of Aikido practice as attention is placed on every day life and conflict. One of the most important lessons in Aikido is meeting violence with violence only escalates the destruction.
